Bayrol solutions to common water problems in Mallorca

To answer your questions quickly and easily, we have put together the following section of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

This problem is usually caused by an excess of organic matter following intensive use or by a clogged filter. In the Balearic climate, it’s vital to first adjust the pH to between 7.0 and 7.4 using pH Minus or pH Plus. The professional Bayrol solution is to carry out a shock chlorination treatment with Chlorifix® o Chloriklar®, thoroughly clean the filter and place a Superflock Plus cartridge in the skimmer to restore full clarity.

Due to the high water hardness in Mallorca, limescale build-up is very common. To remove scale from the walls, brush them down and vacuum up the debris. To prevent the problem from recurring due to the local water mineralisation, regular use of Calcinex® is essential. It helps keep limescale in solution, protecting both your pool surfaces and equipment.

The combination of heat and sunshine in Mallorca encourages algae growth. To reverse this, adjust the pH and carry out a shock treatment with Chlorifix®. Then apply a high-concentration algaecide such as Desalgine® or Desalgine® Jet. It’s essential to keep the filtration running for 24 hours alongside a Superflock Plus cartridge to filter out the dead algae until the water is crystal-clear again.

Many property owners on Mallorcan fincas use well water that is rich in iron. When chlorine is added, the iron oxidises and discolours the water. The solution is to check the alkalinity with Alca-Plus® (keeping it above 100 mg/L) and adjust the pH. Use Superflock Plus in the skimmer continuously for 24-48 hours to bind the iron ions and filter them out until the water regains its natural sparkle.

This indicates the presence of copper, either from pipe corrosion or from the use of poor-quality algaecides with a high copper content. To eliminate it, Bayrol recommends temporarily raising the pH to 7.5-7.8 and using Superflock Plus to trap the copper in the filter. From that point on, always use copper-free algaecides such as Desalgine®, especially if your pool has a salt chlorination system.

Paradoxically, that smell doesn’t mean there’s too much chlorine: it indicates the presence of chloramines caused by insufficient dosing. To eliminate these organic amines, balance the pH and carry out a shock chlorination with Chlorifix®. In Mallorca, we also recommend extending the filter backwash time and adding fresh water to regenerate the system, finishing with Superflock Plus to ensure absolute water purity.
